Fusion Fashion Show 2010

Originally from www.arbitrage.com/2010/03/style-tip-tuesdays-5/

The style tip this week is to push your style.  Try something different!

I was able to attend this year’s F.I.T. (Fashion Institute of Technology) vs. Parsons “Fusion Fashion Show” this weekend.  F.I.T. and Parsons are arguably the two best fashion design schools in America.  With no real football or basketball teams for the student body to get worked up over, it becomes a very big event to showcase new and up-and-coming design talent.  Not all of it is wearable, but as I’ve only recently realized, it’s not necessarily meant to be.  It’s to sell an image and to push a concept to the extreme.  Real innovation in style, and most things, comes from people pushing something past what is “normal” and then having other people reign it back and mellow it out to make it more mainstream.

As you can see, a lot of the Menswear from the designers goes out on a limb that most of our readers wouldn’t be willing to embrace at the runway level.  But pay attention to the mood of the basic shirt underneath, the colors used or the shape of a jacket.  As the late Alexander McQueen explained, “There has to be a balance between your mental satisfaction and the financial needs of your company. But I always remember that it’s the fantasy, the artistic side, that makes customers want to buy the straightforward black pants.”

So if you find yourself wanting to try a shirt you think is crazy or a tie you think is a little too out there, just do it.  If it works, it works, it not, so what…  Yes, clothing does keep us warm and covered up but a lot of it is meant to be fun to wear and to express how you feel about yourself and the world on the inside.

On a personal note, Arbitrage would like to congratulate Woohyun Jang and Mackenzie Sam of the F.I.T. Menswear program, to which Arbitrage Founder, Alan Chan, spoke to back in October.  The judges, including Damien Nunes, fashion editor at GQ, voted F.I.T. as the winner over Parsons by a vote of 3-2.  Also, Woohyun was named Runner Up for Best Designer and Mackenzie was named Best Designer for F.I.T.
